Depression Treatment in Dallas

Depression has a way of reaching into areas of life you might not expect. It can affect how well you sleep, how much energy you have, your relationships, your work, and even how you feel physically. Because depression is not the same for everyone, treatment should not be either.

At The Holiner Psychiatric Group, our psychiatrists look at your symptoms, health history, previous treatments, and individual needs before recommending a course of care. Your depression treatment in Dallas may include psychotherapy, medication management, or additional therapies when more traditional approaches have not brought the relief you need.

The goal is straightforward: find an approach that helps relieve your symptoms and supports a better quality of life.

Understanding Depression

People of all ages are susceptible to depression, and it can come in many different forms: major depression, dysthymia, post-partum depression, minor depression, as well as sadness brought on by seasonal changes. Depression can also affect different ethnicities differently.

Symptoms

Depression can sometimes be triggered through a combination of factors including loss of a loved one, a recent trauma, a divorce, or the loss of a job.  Other times, depression can be triggered by certain genes inherited from a family member, outside environmental issues, or simply a change in hormones. Though there may be different triggers for an individual, depression can be diagnosed through recurring symptoms. This is why it is crucial that a patient’s treatment in Dallas is tailored to their specific needs and addresses the underlying causes of their depression.

You Aren’t Alone

Depression can be felt at any time by anyone. Men and women experience depression differently and exhibit different symptoms. Adults experience depression at a rate of 6.7%, and teenagers experience it at a rate of 3.3%. Those percentages seem small, but that amounts to more than 18 million people in the U.S who are suffering.  Even children can experience depression and often resort to acting out, which is often attributed to adolescent mood swings.

The Holiner Psychiatric Group has both psychiatrists  and psychologists who specialize in depression treatment in Dallas. Contact us by phone or through the form on this page, and we’ll start the process of restoring you to a stronger and more secure self.

Basic Symptoms of depression:

  • Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, guilt, anxiety, and restlessness
  • Extreme changes in sleep patterns, insomnia, or constantly sleeping
  • Loss of interest in hobbies
  • Bouts of unexplainable crying
  • Physical pain or physical exhaustion
  • Thoughts of suicide or feelings of “emptiness”

Statistically, women are diagnosed with depression at higher rates than men, a disparity driven by a complex interplay of biological, hormonal, and socio-cultural factors. The two genders also tend to express the condition differently. Women more commonly experience symptoms on the “sadness spectrum,” which includes persistent sadness, guilt, and worthlessness. In contrast, men often manifest depression through externalized symptoms, such as irritability, anger, restlessness, and a loss of interest in work or hobbies.

Medical Treatment and Therapy

After a diagnostic meeting with a psychiatrist, a medical professional in Dallas will tailor depression treatment to fit the specific needs of the patient. Treatment may include a mixture of medication and therapy to help the patient fully cope with the condition. A medical professional may prescribe antidepressants, which assist the brain in promoting the distribution of dopamine, the chemical that causes feelings of happiness or contentment, and serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in brain health.

The ultimate goal of medication management and psychotherapy is to effectively nurture a healthy state of happiness and independence.  Our services do not just treat your symptoms, but also identify the source of your discomfort, so together we may resolve your issues and return you to a healthy state of mind.

TMS Therapy for Depression

If antidepressants have not provided enough relief, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may be worth considering. TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood. Unlike medication, treatment is directed at targeted areas of the brain rather than circulating throughout the body.

TMS is performed right here in our office, and there is no need for anesthesia. You remain awake throughout the session, and most people can get back to their regular activities once it is over.

This Dallas depression treatment is not completed in a single visit. Instead, you will come in for a series of sessions based on the treatment protocol prescribed for you. How often you receive TMS and how long your treatment course lasts will depend on your individual treatment plan.

If you are still experiencing symptoms after trying antidepressant treatment, your psychiatrist can review your history and help you decide whether TMS makes sense as a next step.

Spravato
SPRAVATO® for Treatment-Resistant Depression

For some people, trying one antidepressant after another still does not provide adequate relief. SPRAVATO® (esketamine) offers another treatment option for certain adults in Dallas with treatment-resistant depression.

SPRAVATO is a prescription nasal spray that works differently from conventional antidepressants. Because of its potential side effects, it is not a medication you take home. You self-administer SPRAVATO at a certified treatment center while under medical supervision.

After receiving your dose, you will stay with us for at least two hours so we can monitor you for possible side effects, including sedation, dissociation, and changes in blood pressure. You will also need to arrange a ride home. Driving and operating machinery must wait until the next day, after you have had a restful night’s sleep.

Treatment is more frequent in the beginning and usually becomes less frequent during the maintenance phase. Before recommending SPRAVATO, we consider your symptoms, health history, response to previous depression treatments, and other factors that may affect whether it is a suitable option for you.

Life doesn’t have to feel difficult all the time – that is not “normal.” We’d love to help you.

The Holiner Psychiatric Group offers several approaches to depression treatment in Dallas. Rather than assuming one treatment will work for everyone, we consider where you are now, what you have already tried, and what may be appropriate going forward.
