Apollo Advanced TMS Therapy in Dallas

Living with depression can make even everyday activities feel overwhelming, especially if symptoms continue despite medication or therapy. Apollo Advanced therapy is an innovative transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment designed to provide another option for eligible patients.

This non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment stimulates specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation without surgery, anesthesia, or sedation. If you are looking for an alternative approach to managing depression, our psychiatric team can help determine whether Apollo Advanced TMS therapy is right for you.

Apollo uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to activate parts of the brain that are underactive in patients experiencing depression. TMS therapy is not the same as ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

The exact cause of depression is still undetermined. However, the leading scientific theory is that depression is triggered by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, which are chemical messengers that deliver information between brain cells.

People of all ages are susceptible to depression, and it can come in many different forms: major depression, dysthymia, post-partum depression, minor depression, as well as sadness brought on by seasonal changes. Depression can also affect different ethnicities differently. Visit us to discuss Apollo Advanced TMS therapy in Dallas.

What is Apollo Advanced Therapy (TMS)?

During an Apollo TMS treatment session in Dallas, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission possible.

Who Might Be a Candidate for TMS Therapy?

Apollo Advanced TMS therapy may be an option for adults in Dallas with major depressive disorder who have not experienced adequate relief from antidepressant medications or who have found medication side effects difficult to manage. It may also be appropriate when you are looking for a non-invasive treatment that does not require anesthesia or downtime.

Before beginning treatment, you will meet with one of our providers for a comprehensive evaluation. We will review your medical history, current symptoms, previous treatments, and overall health to determine whether Apollo Advanced TMS therapy is an appropriate part of your personalized treatment plan.

How Apollo TMS Therapy Works

Here’s what you can expect from a Dallas Apollo Advanced Therapy (TMS) session at The Holiner Psychiatric Group:

before-treatment
Before Treament
Sit back comfortably in a recliner chair. A curved magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.
during-treatment
During Treatment
Apollo delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
after-treatment (1)
After Treatment
Apollo Advanced Therapy: Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, each treatment takes between 19 and 37 minutes.

What Does TMS Therapy Feel Like?

Dallas patients are often pleasantly surprised by how comfortable Apollo Advanced TMS therapy is. During treatment, you will relax in a comfortable chair while a magnetic coil is positioned against your scalp. As the treatment begins, you will hear a clicking sound and notice a gentle tapping sensation where the magnetic pulses are delivered.

Some people experience mild scalp sensitivity during their first few sessions, but this often becomes less noticeable as treatment continues. Because no anesthesia or sedation is used, you will remain awake the entire time and can return to your normal daily routine immediately after your appointment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Your treatment plan is personalized based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and response to therapy. In many cases for Dallas patients, Apollo Advanced TMS therapy is provided five days a week over several weeks to achieve the greatest benefit. Your provider will monitor your progress throughout treatment and may adjust your plan as needed.

You could begin noticing improvements before completing your full course of therapy, while others experience gradual changes over time. Continuing treatment as recommended gives you the best opportunity to achieve meaningful improvement.

TMS Therapy vs. ECT

Although both Apollo Advanced Therapy and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are used to treat depression in Dallas, they are very different treatments

Apollo Advanced Therapy (TMS) uses noninvasive magnetic stimulation. You are awake during treatment, there is no induced seizure, and no recovery period is required. Patients can typically resume normal activities immediately.

ECT uses electrical stimulation performed under anesthesia. You are asleep during treatment, the treatment intentionally produces a controlled seizure, and recovery time is needed after each treatment. Patients usually need someone to drive them home and recover after treatment.

These treatments are different, and there are different criteria that must be met for each. We can answer your question during your consultation and ensure you receive the care you need to address your concerns.
