5 Simple Men’s Health Tips for a Better Life

Did you know the average lifespan for a woman in the U.S. is more than six years longer than a man’s? While partly due to biological factors, the longevity of a man’s life has the potential for extension with a few lifestyle changes. In celebration of Men’s Health Month, take a few minutes each day to utilize these five simple men’s health tips to live a happier and longer life.

Reduce your risk of prostate cancer

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed in men. It is critical for men to know where the prostate is on the body and to perform self-checks for early detection. While a trip to the doctor isn’t the pinnacle of fun, getting yourself checked out by your doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms or noticing abnormalities could literally save your life. More than 300,000 men will die of prostate cancer this year alone, yet it only takes a few simple steps for early detection and prevention.

Avoid trans fats

While much of nutritional science causes debates, experts around the globe agree trans fat has disastrous effects on your health. Multiple studies show artificial trans fat dramatically increases the risk of heart disease, increases inflammation, contributes to obesity and possibly cancer. Nutritional experts recommend trans fat be eliminated entirely from a healthy diet. Excluding processed foods is the best way to avoid trans fat, but many meals in the Standard American Diet undergo processing in some form. To keep trans fat intake to a minimum, stay away from foods labeled “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated.”

Ensure your mental health is in check

Men are less likely than women to seek out mental health services, despite men making up more than 75 percent of suicide victims in the United States. Many men “suffer in silence,” feeling lonely and isolated with no hope for improvement. Feelings of anxiousness, depression and anger take years off your life. For diagnosis and treatment of depression, eating disorders, ADHD, or other mental illnesses in the McKinney or Dallas area, visit our homepage to learn more about our services or call to schedule an appointment.

Find a doctor and have regular check-ups

Men are less likely to visit a physician, even when they think something is wrong. These actions contribute to a shorter lifespan and are easily preventable: find a doctor and schedule an appointment. Select a physician you can comfortably discuss any issues with, from mental to sexual health.

Enjoy the small things in life

A study conducted through the Harvard School of Public Health found feelings of optimism can cut the risk of coronary heart disease in half. Less stress and more happiness lead to a more fulfilling, satisfying and longer life. Make sure you are enjoying something every single day, even if it is small. Things like a walk through the park, yoga and meditation, reading a good book or playing with a pet can increase your overall optimism.

Even after Men’s Health Month ends, it is essential for men of all ages to continue to take care of themselves year-round. Enjoy the small things, keep up with regular diet and exercise, and visit a doctor or mental health professional if something isn’t right.
